introduction about the webportal

The Bioinformatics Webportal provides access to webbased information services for plant scientists and for bioinformaticians working on plant data, as well is for students in life sciences. The webportal aims to facilitate easy access to information, data, software and services available through the Internet. The focus of the information and services is on plant bioinformatics.

Within the portal:

• Homepages of Wageningen University Laboratory of Bioinformatics.
• Tools
  Access to bioinformatics tools that run on the Wageningen Bioinformatics server maintained by the Laboratory of Bioinformatics.
• A database of bioinformatics resources and websites.
• Bioinformatics Background
  Webpages with history and background information about bioinformatics. These pages contain introductory information and serve as a reference as well. The focus is on applications in plant research.

• The Bioinformatics Information Gateway
  An information gateway provides access to selected electronic sources (websites, databases, pdf's etc). Sources are selected based on scope, usefulness and quality. A catalogue that can be browsed or searched provides descriptive information about the selected sources, including keywords, abstract, etc. The Bioinformatics Information Gateway is a joint effort of the Bioinformatics Group and the library of Wageningen University to build up an e-library in the field of (plant) bioinformatics. To search for bioinformatics e-resources within the virtual library go to Wageningen Desktop Library
• Bioinformatics Events Database.
  This database with information on courses, symposia and events in the field of bioinformatics and genomics can now be searched on www.geneyous.nl.

The initial development of the Bioinformatics Webportal by Christine Bunthof was part of the NWO-Biomolecular Informatics project Wageningen Phytoinformatics. The portal was launched 1 August 2003.
